English in Action

During English lessons children learn to improve their speaking and listening skills through a variety of paired and group activities. They learn to express themselves and understand the spoken language. Teachers model good sentence construction, pronunciation and grammar. We encourage children to use a wide vocabulary and are continually seeking to expand their lexicon. Drama activities enrich the Curriculum.

Reading Rocks!

Children encounter a wide range of reading materials; both in terms of genre and format. Reading skills are taught through English lessons and are supported by a range of quality literature and a structured reading scheme. Children who are new to English are taught the phonetic system. Reading for pleasure is promoted across the department.

Creating Writers

At Britannica there is a balance between teaching the structure required for good writing and fostering creative minds. Children are taught to recognize the ingredients for good writing and have practice replicating these in their own work. We aim to inspire our young writers with a range of interesting and engaging stimuli. Writing competitions and events give the children a chance to showcase their writing achievements.
